Wyvern Christmas Cracker 10KSunday, 9th December 2007 - by Shirly Lloyd
On a blustery Sunday morning 23 Somer AC members met in the comfort and
warmth of Weston College. Wearing the mandatory tinsel and some really pushing
the boat out with Christmas Pudding hats (Jean), red robin T shirts
(up the City Julian) and other Christmassy attire.
At 10.45am we were all pushed outside and made our way to the starting line
for the Christmas Cracker 10K 2007 on Weston beach under the pier.
11am the hooter sounded and off we went. The 80 mile an hour winds swirling
around us, hats and head gear instantly blowing off our heads as we fought
the elements. There were varying degrees of wind, high, very high, extremely
high and b******y impossible to run in high. We made our way slowly along the
beach, grateful when we finally hit the road (the wind still blowing a gale)
then back onto the beach for another onslaught. Back onto the road and around
the town, which on occasions was completely devoid of wind, what a treat,
great for making up for lost time, until, back on the beach. If it was
windy on the way out, it had multiplied tenfold on the way back. The G force took
your breath away, forcing your mouth open, meaning it was impossible to confine
the spittle within. (It was just like the Baileys ad on TV). This 1 mile or so
felt more like 5, the effort of pushing against a vertical gale was exhausting
and the finishing line never seemed to get any closer. Finally with the clock
in site and just over an hour after starting it was all over for another year.
A cup of water, a nice new T-shirt, a mince pie and back into the warm, the pain
almost forgotten!!! Time for a cup of tea and to catch up with the other Somer
members who seemed to enjoy it as much as we did!!!!
Congratulations to Peter Duracinsky our first man home and to Tracey Holborn
our first woman. A big WELL DONE to all our runners, we are all very brave,
or extremely stupid.
Thanks to Chris, Jane and the poodles for their support, surprised they didn't
get blown into the sea.
