Somer Youth

The latest addition to our club is Somer Youth, dedicated to athletes aged from 13 to 17 years. Somer Youth provides a transition between our Juniors and the Senior athletes, building upon the running, jumping and throwing skills learned at younger age groups.

The aim of Somer Youth is to:

  1. Provide age appropriate activities
  2. Provide a range of physical challenges in line with each athlete’s ability and ambition
  3. Place greater emphasis on competition, both within the club and against youth sections from other athletic clubs

When?

Somer Youth meets every Thursday at Norton Hill Sports Centre, Midsomer Norton at 7.15pm. We aim to finish by 8.30pm with some run-on likely if light allows. Training operates through half terms but breaks in line with term times at Christmas, Easter and throughout August.

Occasionally, we may arrange to meet at another venue, for instance, at a local athletics track or a suitable cross country start point. Such events will be well publicised. To keep abreast of these and any other changes to the programme, find and join the Somer AC Facebook page and check well ahead of the Thursday sessions. 

Who can join?

The club is open to anyone aged 13 to 17 years and athletes in our Junior section can step up after their 13th birthday where space in Somer Youth allows. We operate a waiting list system for this group so please use the contact form below to express your interest in Somer Youth. Before turning up to your first session, please await contact from one of the coaching team to confirm that a place is available.

Once membership is confirmed, an annual subscription fee is due. See the Club Info – Join Somer AC section of this site.

Training

We use the UKA Athletics 365 programme as a base for our training. This involves running, jumping and throwing activities, allowing each athlete to explore their strengths while experimenting with different disciplines within the sport.

Wherever possible, athletes will train outside and should arrive in time for each session equipped with a high visibility shower proof jacket or high viz vest. The spring/summer programme includes:

Sprints – 100m, 200m, 400m Middle distance – 800m, 1500m + mile Triple jump
Cross country Throws – shot + javelin Long jump
Strength + conditioning Hurdles Relays

Competition

Somer Youth provides a pathway into athletic competition. For most athletes, this will be a new experience and emphasis is placed on participation and teamwork within the athletic squad. Events include fun runs, inter-club athletic meets, regional competitions and low-key challenges within our club.
