Somer AC has a dedicated team of England Athletics trained coaches and run leaders. Our coaching team possess a range of EA qualifications meaning that they can safely deliver a wide range of sessions suitable for experienced runners and those embarking on their running journey. Here’s just a selection of what we offer…
Fartlek A fartlek run is a style of training where you mix faster and slower running in an unstructured way. We run 5 to 12km continuously, varying the pace based on feel rather than strict intervals or set distances, in groups of similar pace/ability so you’ll feel both challenged and comfortable in your running. During the winter months, we will run around Midsomer Norton and Radstock but in summer, we will use some of the country lanes around Haydon and Clapton.

Hills Hill repetitions are used to build power, speed, and running economy without the impact stress of flat‑ground sprinting. They involve running up a hill with a steady gradient at a strong effort over a set time or distance. Recovery is gained as you walk/jog down the hill before starting the next repeat. We also focus on technique to prevent injury and increase endurance including how to run downhill too. We have no shortage of hills around Midsomer Norton to tackle, and it is one of our most popular sessions.

Intervals These allow runners to build speed, endurance, and race‑pace control more effectively than a continuous run while still getting enough rest to repeat the effort. It’s a structured session that alternates fast running with periods of recovery, repeating that cycle several times.

Strength and Conditioning We run S&C sessions of targeted exercises to prepare your body to handle the repetitive, high‑impact nature of running, ensuring muscles are robust and well‑coordinated. This includes strength work such as squats, deadlifts and lunges. Core training, stability and balance work, and jumps/explosive movements are designed to build stronger muscles, tendons, and improve movement and flexibility. These sessions are typically held at Norton Hill School sports complex.

Mile Repeats These are a structured speed‑endurance workout that blends speed with sustained endurance to build physical and mental strength and hold pace faster and longer. Run one mile at a hard but controlled pace, recover, and then repeat the mile again for several repetitions.
